Strong willed and independent, young Lea Kaplan rejects the life that her family plans for her. She travels alone to Bialystok, Poland to join an upstart Kibbutz. There, she meets ruggedly handsome Izak Kuncewicki. They marry and welcome a baby son Ephraim. Life seems full of promise. In 1937 everything changes. As Hitler’s plan for a master race develops, Izak joins the resistance. Separated by war, Lea and her young son escape death time and again, surviving as best they can. Izak leads soldiers in battle. Captured, he spends four years in a Siberian death camp. As the Holocaust sweeps across Europe, both husband and wife begin to despair of ever seeing one another again. Re-united after the war by an almost unbelievable twist of fate, Lea and Izak pray to have a new life in Israel. When the borders to their ancestral homeland close, Izak once again joins the underground, smuggling immigrants to Jerusalem. Will Lea and Izak ever reach the Promised Land?

I was thoroughly involved in this story from page one as though this were my own grandparents. Though sad, this is a story of courage and strength during a horrific time in history. I must read. Just have tissues nearby.Product details

One Day One Moment One Breath Bill Kuncewicki 9781502320025 Books Reviews
Wonderful story. First hand enlightening account of the psychological ravages of war. Everyone should read this. PAR
I read the 1st edition of this book - and I was thrilled with the story that unfolded. I cannot wait to read this edition - I have said from the start that this needs to be a movie - It is a story that truly MUST be told.
This book brings the horrors of the Holocaust vividly to life. The author shares the true story his parents and older brother had to endure during and after the war. I'm looking forward to the next book, written from the perspective of a child survivor.
I've never read a true holocaust and war story like this. What begins as a romance becomes a struggle for survival.Torn apart by war, neither is willing to be passive victims. Izak, the husband joins the resistance and fights with first the Polish army and then the Russian. Lea, the wife and her son escape the Nazis to make their way through Europe, surviving as best they can, foraging for food, and getting by with the help of strangers who risk their own lives to help.
When the war is over and neither knows if the other is alive, a twist of fate reunites them. Their dream is to live in Israel, but the struggle isn't over yet. The border is closed and Izak once again is in the resistance, smuggling others to the Promised Land.
I read it in just two sittings, and truly didn't want to put it down!! This is a TRUE story from an important era in history -- the Holocaust. Story was easy to follow, so also readable by teenage youths. Highly recommended!
[ It bothers me somewhat that the 3-line Title wasn't split differently by the 'independent publisher,' for clarity & better visual presentation. If it goes to another printing, hope they improve it with this change
(line 1) "ONE DAY" ; (line 2) "ONE MOMENT" ; (line 3) "ONE BREATH" ]
After reading this book, I purchased two additional copies, one for each of the two synagogues serving my community. This book is a "must read" for gaining a real-life view of the impact of the Holocaust on a family who manages to survive and then thrive.
I was thoroughly involved in this story from page one as though this were my own grandparents. Though sad, this is a story of courage and strength during a horrific time in history. I must read. Just have tissues nearby.
